Auction houses, museums, and collectors recognize the expertise of Achim Moeller and frequently approach him with works for authentication. Through the Lyonel Feininger Project LLC, Achim Moeller has been providing certificates of authenticity for works attributed to the artist since 1987. In the past decades, he has issued more than 1800 certificates of authenticity and has been able to identify hundreds of fake works. All works that are determined authentic are registered with an individual certificate number in the archives of the Lyonel Feininger Project LLC.
As the internationally recognized authority on the life and work of Lyonel Feininger, Achim Moeller is regularly called upon to advise public institutions on major exhibitions. He has acted as a special consultant for a number of retrospectives including “Lyonel Feininger: At the Edge of the World” organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and “Lyonel Feininger: Von Gelmeroda nach Manhattan,” at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin and the Haus der Kunst, Munich. In addition to his work as an adviser, Achim Moeller has also served as the editor for numerous publications and exhibition catalogues including “Years of Friendship, 1944-1956: The Correspondence of Lyonel Feininger and Mark Tobey,” and “Lyonel Feininger: Drawings and Watercolors from the Julia Feininger Estate.”
The first volume of Lyonel Feininger: The Catalogue Raisonné of Paintings by Achim Moeller is available at feiningerproject.org. The Catalogue Raisonné is the first expansion of the oeuvre list compiled by Feininger’s wife, Julia, published in Hans Hess’ monograph on Lyonel Feininger in 1959. The new Catalogue Raisonné is the definitive e-resource for the study of Feininger's life and work, which will be regularly expanded and updated when new information comes to light. It currently features all paintings created between 1907 and 1918 as well as extensive literature and exhibition lists.
