Moves to Moscow with his family.

Visits the Moscow World Exposition.

Is commissioned as a lieutenant in the Samogita Infantry-Grenadier’s Regiment in Moscow.
1889
Is transferred to a regiment based in Saint Petersburg.
1889-96
Studies at the Academy of Art in Saint Petersburg with Ilya Repin.
1896
Along with fellow students Igor Grabar, Dmitry Kardovsky, and Marianne Werefkin, he moves to Munich to study with Anton Ažbe. While there, he meets Vasily Kandinsky.

Spends his summers travelling around Europe.

Exhibits with the Fauves at the Salon d’Automne. Visits Ferdinand Hodler.
1907
Begins a friendship with Jan Verkade and meets Paul Sérusier, both of whom teach him about the Synthetist principles of art.

Spends his summer with Wereflkin, Kandinsky, and Gabrielle Munter in the Bavarian Alps.
1909
Founds the Neue Künstlervereiniging München (NKVM).
1911-12
Renews contact with Henri Matisse and Emil Nolde.

Expelled from Germany, he moves to Switzerland.
1917-19
Produces Mystical Heads, one of his best-known series.
1921
Begins his Abstract Heads series.
1924
Galka Scheyer organizes the Blue Four, a group which includes Jawlensky, Kandinsky, Feininger, and Klee.
1929
Begins suffering from crippling arthritis.
1933
The Nazis classify his work as degenerate art, forbidding him from exhibiting.
1934-37
Produces more than 1,000 works for the Meditations series.
1937
His physical condition prevents him from painting.
1938
Begins dictating his memoirs.
1941
Dies March 15 in Wiesbaden, Germany.
