Marino Marini is born February 27 in Pistoia, Italy.

1917
Studies painting at the Academia di Belle Arti.

1928
Travels to Paris where he makes his debut as a sculptor and studies with Picasso.

1929-40
Teaches at the Scuola d’Arte di Villa Reale, Monza.

1936
Moves to Tenero-Locarno, Switzerland. Makes his first equestrian sculpture.

1940
Teaches sculpture at the Academia di Belle Arti di Breva, Milan.

1943
Goes into exile in Switzerland.

1944
Participates in the exhibition “Twentieth-Century Italian Art” at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

1946
Moves to Milan.

1950s
Gains international recognition as the result of three major exhibitions held in Amsterdam, Brussels and New York.

 

 

1951
A travelling exhibition of his work opens at the Kestner-Geselleschaft, Hannover.

1952
Wins the Grand Prize for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale.

1959
A monumental sculpture by Marini is installed at The Hague.

1962
A retrospective is held at the Künsthaus Zurich.

1963-64
The first exhibition of his paintings is held at Toninelli Arte Moderna, Milan.

1966
A retrospective is held at the Palazzo Venezia, Rome.

1973
A permanent installation of his work opens at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna, Milan.

1978
The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo organizes an exhibition of his work.

1980
Dies on August 6 in Viareggio, Italy.
